Ionized Hydrogen Water Explained

Electrolyzed Reduced Water (ERW)

Some electrolysis devices advertise the resulting water as “ionized” or “alkaline.” In practice, when electricity splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, a semi‑permeable membrane separates the chambers so hydrogen accumulates on one side while oxygen and acidic water accumulate on the other[1]. The water near the cathode becomes alkaline and is sometimes called electrolyzed reduced water (ERW); it has high pH, low dissolved oxygen, high dissolved hydrogen and a negative oxidation–reduction potential. Reviews conclude that the only component responsible for any observed biological effects is the dissolved hydrogen gas[1]. Changing the pH alone does not confer health benefits.

Choosing a Device

High‑quality hydrogen generators use solid polymer electrolyte and proton exchange membrane technology to produce pure hydrogen gas without harmful by‑products such as chlorine or ozone[2]. These devices usually create water containing 1000–2000 ppb of dissolved hydrogen—close to saturation. When shopping for a generator, look for specifications on dissolved hydrogen concentration rather than claims about alkalinity or micro‑clustering. Avoid devices that lack transparent test results. Certifications like CE‑EMC and RoHS provide assurance of electrical safety and material compliance[2]. Once water is saturated, additional electrolysis cycles will not increase hydrogen concentration beyond about 1.6 ppm[3].
