  • Kidney and liver health: Hemodialysis patients experienced improved renal function and reduced fatigue[5], while hydrogen water improved liver function and reduced viral DNA in chronic hepatitis B[6].
  • Mental health: Consuming hydrogen water for four weeks improved mood and reduced anxiety[7].
  • Anti‑aging: Six months of hydrogen water intake improved physical strength and brain metabolism in older adults[8] and may increase telomere length[9].

These findings are promising but arise from small studies. Larger, longer‑term trials are needed to determine optimal dosing, confirm efficacy and assess benefits across broader populations.

How Hydrogen Works

Molecular hydrogen’s therapeutic effects stem from its ability to diffuse rapidly and selectively neutralize highly reactive radicals while sparing beneficial species[10]. Hydrogen can penetrate cell membranes, mitochondria and even the nucleus, modulating cell signalling pathways, reducing inflammation and preventing apoptosis. It may activate the Nrf2 pathway, upregulating antioxidant enzymes and downregulating inflammatory cytokines. Research Gaps and Future Directions

Most studies to date involve small sample sizes and short durations. There is no consensus on the optimal dosage, timing or hydrogen concentration. Long‑term, large‑scale clinical trials are required to confirm benefits, establish safety in vulnerable groups and evaluate cost‑effectiveness. Researchers are also exploring alternative delivery methods—such as inhalation and topical application—and investigating hydrogen’s potential in conditions ranging from neurodegenerative diseases to cardiovascular disorders.
